On October 1, 2023, Microsoft unbundled Teams from its M365 and Office 365 licenses sold in the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. The company also took steps to improve interoperability with third-party collaboration solutions. The moves came in response to the European Commission’s investigation into anticompetitive practices. 

Effective April 1, 2024, Microsoft removed Teams from its subscriptions sold outside the EEA. The change creates more consistency worldwide — a boon for multinational companies. For most organizations, however, it means more licenses to understand, procure and manage.
